How can I get rid of a bird's nest next to my window air conditioning unit?
My husband and I moved here 8 months ago and there's been a nest next to the AC unit in my office window since before we got here. It wasn't a big deal at first, but the birds are very loud and annoying, and I know they can spread diseases, as well. I spend a lot of time in my office, and I have 3 hamsters in here as well that I don't want getting sick! I've already asked my husband to get rid of the nest, but I'm not so sure I want him just unscrewing the plastic window covering and aiming a broom at the nest, in case the stuff gets inside or (worse) a bird gets inside. Any suggestions? And if I call a professional to get rid of it, do you think they'll charge me an arm and a leg? P.S. There are birds living in it, but I don't think there are babies...it's the wrong time of year. Complicating matters is the fact that it's an upstairs window, we don't have a house, and we are renting this apartment, which is over a hair salon.

- 1. make sure no bird is living it in now or no eggs. 2. just open the window and push it out, its not that contagious. more risk in hugging a person with aids than touching a nest and people hug them every day..
- if you turn you air condintioning on it should get rid of the birds but most likely the birds nest will still be there, but the birds will not come back.
- Even if it is expensive wouldn't it be worth it? Sounds like you lose a lot of peace and quiet, call em and see what they say.
- Let your husband take care of it. Seems like a waste of money to hire someone to come out and remove the nest for you. Just push it off with a broom. You might have to do this several times just in case the birds rebuild.
- I would just knock it out.. it's not THAT diseased.
- leave the fecking birds alone. You're probably, most likely annoying to them too!
- we believe that if you do anything bad to nest you may get same thing to your sweet home. so leave it where it is
- well you should call the SPCA and have them help you out. they will help you and relocate them. and if you get a professional to do it, i do not think that they will charge you an arm and a leg. but i would advise that you should call a few, tell them of your situation then ask how much they will charge and compare them and see which one will fit your budget.
- just get a ladder and go up there and get them down were some gloves or something and a breathing mask if your worried that much about catching something. Birds dont ever bite really and if the do it does not hurt.
- The birds can be mean if they have babies in the nest...I would just get out there with a broom and have at it.
- Get a snake from a local snake dealer, and release it outside by the nest. Make sure it is a species native to your part of the country. There are laws against release of exotic species. Or if you are reluctant to do this, just wait until the fledglings have left the nest, and then remove it with gloves. A filter over your mouth and nose, or a tight bandanna soaked in witch hazel, should protect you from disease. I would certainly charge you an arm and a leg for such a request. You should be able to handle this one on your own. What kind of birds are they? Any idea?
- It won't get you sick.. but the droppings will that are on the air conditioner well.. I would hit it with a hose a few times and be done with it.. After the baby birds mature, they will leave and won't come back anyway..
- I wouldnt worry too much about disease from touching the nest although i would wear gloves and a mask when u handle it to be safe. You have more chance of getting sick or bitten if you leave it there and continue to operate the air conditioner.I am surprised you arent getting bitten by bird louse or mites as it is. I would just get a jug of water the wet the nest so dust doesnt become airborne and place it in a bag. Depending on the breed of bird depends on whether the will come back or not. If the do there are plenty of products u can get to alleviate the problem...bird spikes that cover the window sill so the birds cant land and nest...Bird glue the birds stick to when they land, although they can get off it but you will find they dont come back. I am in Australia so I cant make comment on the price of getting a proffesional to come in but I would try these things first...and make sure u clean the filters in your air con unit Good Luck
