Window Covering

Can you suggest a window treatment for large windows in a formal dinining room that have plantation shutters?

The shutters come out pretty far when they are open so the window treatment needs to accomodate them.

  1. You may want to try a fabric wrapped cornice. Just make sure that when you mount it, that you mount it high enough for the shutter panels to swing open under the cornice. You can either hire someone to custom make this cornice for you, or you can make it yourself if your handy. Without getting to technical, a cornice is a flat board with attached flat board sides that you staple cotton to, then staple a fabric to, and then mount it to the wall.
  2. Do the shutters cover the entire window? If so, that's usually the only window treatments needed. If it's a half window shutter than a valance would look good. In a formal room keep the valance a solid color or lace. If you want to hang drapes in addition to your shutters, try hanging a decorative rod iron curtain rod about 3 inches above the window extending about 3 to 5 inches past each side of the window. Hang solid drapes. This will leave a little of your wall color showing above the window and keep the curtains to the side of the window for good lighting.
  3. I'd try something like this (see link below). Perhaps with only the swag if you want to see the plantation shutters...use a curtain bar with brackets that adjust to come out further from the wall. The second link shows a rod that adjusts up to 4 inches away from the wall. Good luck!!
  4. it all depends on what effect you want your windows to create and what your view is outside of the window. if you are in the city and are facing a green and purple building i would paint the windows with something that would create a stained glass effect. there is not much information in your question other than that the shutters come out pretty far. does this mean that they open into the room or that they take up a lot of space on the sides of the windows from folding up. if they just fold up try and take your inspiration from the basic them of the room.
