Blackout Window Shades Knowledge Base
Do window shades with vertical railing exist? I've been imagining a type of window shades that would roll up and down inside vertical rails attached to the sides of a window frame, so as to completely block the light. As seen in Velux windows: http://www.domwebx.com/Preben/LightBlock_Shade.html Up until now, the only blackout shades I could find are not guided by such rails. This doesn't block the light from entering on the sides. Do such a thing exist in the USA, and where can I get one? Alternatively, I could probably fit some railing system on the sides of a window frame. In this case, what system would you advise me to get?
How to install Blackout Shades to windows with curtains so I can have both? My home theatre is basically in the living room. There are lots of windows. The windows already have white curtains. I want to put in some Blackout Shades, so I can roll them down only when I want to watch movies. I want to have both the shades and the curtains so I can have the curtains there and the shades down only for movies. I like the curtains so I can still have light in the living room but people can't see into my house. And I want to be able to roll down blackout shades for when we are watching a movie. Is that possible? How do I do it? I'm planning on black coloured blackout shades. The house is not mines, so I can't install shade holders on to the wall. I need a way to attach the shades to the curtain holder thats already there. Thanks.
What is most effective at blocking daylight: blackout shades, or roman blinds? The shades/blinds will be installed inside the window frame, and there will be an additional curtain in front of the window. Interresting how people are so quick to judge... I want to block out the light so that my son sleeps past 6am (the sun wakes him up) and so that he naps better and isn't tired. I am using tinfoil right now, but it's unnatractive, and dark all the time. I want to be able to let the light in for most of the day.
I want to make blackout shades? I don't have much money so can you give me some cheap long lasting ideas that look decent from the outside of the window? My mom wont let me use aluminum foil or garbage bags so I've been try to think of anything else I can use that doesn't cost a lot.
Is there window hardware out there for bay windows? I'm looking for a curtain rod that is maybe designed to go all the way around the octagon shape. Any suggestions on what to do with bay windows? I have faux wood blinds already but I'm thinking of putting a roman shade over them for even more blackout and to add some color. Not sure if I want long curtains as my young ones will hang on them.
I need to block out light COMPLETELY from my window in order to sleep? Hey, I am 17 years old and I wake up every morning right around 7 because the sunlight comes in through my window. I already have a blackout shade and blackout curtains but they are pieces of sh^t. I have taped cardboard boxes all over my window in an attempt to block out the rest of the light, but I missed a few places and I woke up again this morning early. I need to be able to sleep in because I stay out late and I just get mean when I'm sleep deprived and I don't want to be! Please help me out, if you have any ideas of how to completely eliminate light from my window. (I have tried sleeping with those little eye masks on, but they come off easily and they give me acne too- sick.) THANK YOU!
alternatives to roller shades...? I really like the blackout feature on roller shades. But I rent and will be moving soon. I don't want to spend the money on blackout roller shades for my kids' bedrooms, especially since I have to have them custom made for their windows. Does anyone have any good ideas for alternatives? I don't want blankets, etc. hanging on their windows. Any ideas?
What do you think of Shia Labouf's m-stubation comments? After being asked what if was like on the Charlie's Angels set: "Holy f*cking Christ! Really disgusting if I get into elaborate details. I remember my trailer was set up in such a way that Cameron Diaz’s and Lucy Liu’s trailers were visible through my window, through this little shade I had. I’d put down the blackout shade just enough to have my eye peeping through and get them in my crosses. I’d be inside totally going at it. Just the thought of them changing in their trailers was enough to get me off." He also goes on to talk about his mother and that if she wasn't his mom he would date her :/ Eww.... who wanted to know that?! I find it soooo disgusting and wrong.. and if I was Lucy, Cameron or his mom I'd be really creeped out right now... That's sooo disrespectful to Lucy and Cameron though, like if he absolutely HAD to share that with the world, did he have to mention their names? It makes me wonder what he does on the Transformers set with Megan Fox... eww. So anyway out there agree?
What color curtains should I get for insulated/blackout? I'm looking for better privacy curtains for my front living room windows. I already have a pretty (but transparent) bamboo shade, and a black decorative rod. The room is eclectic, cottage chic mixed with some mod/retro elements. There's a LOT of grey tweed/berber going on, and a lot of 70s paneling. There's some white (I like fresh mixed with natural), pops of color in accents (yellow, magenta, fern green, rust orange...), and light pine color furniture. I know, a lot mixed up! Which is why I'm having a hard time picking good (but cheap) curtains. They need to be about 63 length. Would it be too much to add another textural natural looking fabric on top of the bamboo and all the paneling and tweed? Or should I go matte and simple? Would a white or cream be too light for blackout/privacy? If I need a darker color, what would work without making the room feel too overwhelming? I'm looking at jcpenney online, walmart, plowhearth.com. I'm open to other suggestions. Thanks for the help!
How do I cool off my room this summer? I face a unique problem because the people who designed our home 30 years ago really ephed up. All our bedrooms are on the 2nd floor, and I picked my room because it's the second largest (the master bedroom was biggest). I like my room immensely, except for one flaw. IT IS UNBEARABLE IN THE SUMMER. My bedroom is above the garage, and in the corner of the house so 2 walls are outside walls. The window faces west, so the afernoon and evening sun is always baking the room. And for some reason all the vents in this house are underneath windows or by outside doors. So most the cool air gets sucked out the window, or baked before it can actually cool off my room. The master bedroom is also in a corner (with 2 outside walls) with a window facing the same way. But it's not above the garage, and a tree in the yard block a lot of the light coming through their window. So it's normally fine. I always have my ceiling fan, and a smaller fan going in the summer - all the time. And it still gets so muggy and hot in here. I need some better ways to cool this place off. I have dark shades in front of my window, and I'm thinking of replacing those thin drapes with blackout drapes (typically used in theatres to keep out light). They are thick and heavy and will block out the sun, and hopefully keep the cool in better, but the major problem is the garage, which is slightly insultated. Mm, something I just thought of is the attic above me. Those little windows to help vent the heat in there is right next/above my room. That probably doesn't help too much either. I really need some advice. Anything to get this room cooled down to a bearable tempature!
I need help naming this song? I want something ironic and witty. weary of the earths spin. got a devil on my shoulder, god on my sleeve. & “it never got old.” is the last trick i want engraved on my tombstone. who will i be by noon? laid beneath a moon that knew the blues. he needs a reboot; ‘cos his crashin’ like a wire’s loose heaven? no, i think i’ve got the wrong room. gunna’ fly out the window. i’m a one-way to early grave’s still it makes you swoon. ———————————————- leave it all in the dust - shades on through sunset & stand off the body clocks quit ticking, we’re winding backwards singin’ leave it all in the dust - shades on through sunset & stand off. you make time slow for me (sing) we’re the die hard of living ———————————- wait up past two go ‘south’ for the summer feel somethin’ new droppin’ breadcrumbs of moments too blurry an hour & maybe you’ll clear the woods of me. —————————————— well i won’t blackout while i’m in the spotlight, but it’s been gettin’ dizzy & dim for me. see me off in the morning, “he’s done” whispered under breaths & the hum of the engine while i catch the direction of the wind.
Is it too much to ask that my A/C unit keep the house at 67 degrees? A little background- it averages 99 degrees in June with a heat index of 105 to 108 where I live. Humidity is near or at 100% 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 1 window I have that gets direct sunlight (with the others, the sun is blocked by trees) has a blackout curtain on it. 1200 sq ft, 2 Floors, 1 central AC unit, outside fan and condenser are in the shade about 60% of the day. To keep the bedroom downstairs cool, I have all downstairs vents closed except 1. Same with upstairs - just the vent to my bedroom stays open. If I open multiple downstairs, the AC actually stays off for quite some time, however the upstairs in unbearably hot. When I go to sleep at night, I have to close the downstairs vent that I leave open during the day to keep the bedroom cool. The air blows out of the vent at a constant 49.7 - 52.2 degrees. If I open all air vents in the townhouse, the A/C runs for hours on end with the upstairs being overly hot and the downstairs being constantly really cold. I replace the filter once per month, don't know about the maintennce history (is my apartment- I rent it). I am an end unit townhouse, so I do have 3 sides exposed. Construction is 100% brick, concrete firewall between the floors and the one wall I share with another townhouse. The unit has 2 roofs- 1 actual roof, and then a roof veneer that was added later if that makes any sense. Any other thoughts?
What would go well with a black, white and red bedroom scheme? I am in dire need of assistance in the choice of curtains and bed linens. Recently, my family have been reassigned back home, so I will be able to redecorate it in any style I want. The last time I touched the room in terms of interior decorating was when I was 6, when I chose a pastel pink for my room. Now that I'm a teenager, that has to change. I have decided on mainly a black and white color scheme for my room, with dashes of red. The walls will be pure white, with maybe one wall with wallpaper from grahambrown.com called FRAMES. My closet will be a black wood laminate, as will my desk and shelves. There will be some hints of red like a small one seater couch that is a fire hydrant red, and I think a part of my storage units will be a vibrant shade of red as well. The only thing I worry about is what bed covers and curtains will go well with these colors? Should I put a colorful rug as well? For extra information, it's a small room so I'd like the natural lighting from the windows to be bright but if it gets too sunny, I'd like to have some blackout curtains. So that means I'll be getting double layer curtains. I'd like a vintage feel to my room because I love all things artistic (e.g photography), so do help me with choosing something that would suit me on to early adulthood. If there are any other suggestions on switching up the color scheme to complement my artistic/vintage/modern interests, I'd be open to them.
